In “ My Papas Waltz” Roethke expresses many forms of figurative language that shows a deeper meaning using imagery and helps you paint a picture in your mind. One example of imagery can be found in “ My right ear scraped a buckle” {11}. This makes you see a drunk, rough man who abuses alcohol. Which ends up scrapping he’s ear on the beer bottle. Another example of imagery is “The whiskey on your breath” {1}. This helps you see a wasted man, who wreaks the smell of alcohol.  Roethke does an absorber job at helping you see he’s poem in different points of views.
